The creator of HBO, who contributed greatly to the spread of cable television in the United States, billionaire Charles Dolan has died at the age of 98. His family owned an entire empire: sports complexes, in particular Madison Square Garden, basketball teams, as well as the cable company AMC Network and BBC America. The BBC reports this.
Before moving to New York and getting into cable television, Dolan lived in Ohio and sold sports and production films. He realized that cable television was needed in New York because tall buildings were blocking the TV signal, and he moved there to start a business.

In 1964, Dolan negotiated with the New York City mayor's office to bring cable television to certain buildings in Manhattan. A few years later, in hopes of attracting viewers, he struck a deal with the New York Knicks and Rangers basketball teams to broadcast games on cable television.
He subsequently created Home Box Office, a company that became known by its acronym HBO. True, he sold it - Disney now owns it - to create Cablevision. This company provides the northeast coast of the United States with Internet and cable television.
In 2015, Cablevision was sold to European company Altice for nearly $18 billion. According to the publication, by that time Dolan’s son James already owned the so-called family empire, which includes AMC Network and BBC America.

The Dolan family became known as "the family New Yorkers love to hate." This "hate" stemmed from the fact that the family's basketball teams were performing poorly, and the owners of the AMC cable network were threatening to stop broadcasting the Academy Awards and the World Series (the decisive series of games in Major League Baseball in North America).
