SCMP notes that high-precision timing systems are “the foundation of modern warfare.” It allows radars separated by thousands of kilometers to synchronously track stealth fighters, improves signals in electronic warfare and facilitates the transfer of large amounts of data. According to the publication, ultra-precise chronometers “can turn science fiction into reality,” for example, by combining lasers or microwaves from different combat platforms into a death beam to “destroy enemies with enormous energy.”
The atomic clock was developed by a team of scientists from the National Institute of Metrology of China under the leadership of Professor Lin Pingwei. According to the scientists, in real-world testing, the watch's long-term stability "reached an astonishing level of five quadrillionths."
