“Anora” was cut for showing in Russia
Russian distributors framed scenes of drug use in the romantic comedy Anora, which won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for a Golden Globe in five categories. The telegram channel “Commandant of the Cinema Fortress” drew attention to this.
According to the telegram channel, footage of drug use was cut off in at least four scenes of the comedy. The viewer thus sees only part of what happens in the original version of the movie. At the same time, the distributors reportedly left the soundtrack and some footage in which the characters are holding drug devices.

Anora is a comedy directed by American director Sean Baker about the life of dancer Anora (Mikey Madison), who spontaneously marries the son of a Russian oligarch Ivan (Marc Eidelstein). The action takes place in the USA and, according to the plot, Ivan’s parents, played by Alexey Serebryakov and Daria Ekamasova, interfere in the relationship of the young couple.
In May 2024, the film received the main award of the Cannes Film Festival - the Palme d'Or. At the awards ceremony, Baker said he dedicated the award to "all sex workers - current, past and future."
In addition, the film was nominated in five categories for the Golden Globe Award. The film's actor Yura Borisov was nominated for the prize for Best Supporting Actor.
The case of censoring scenes in films is not the first in Russia in recent years. In October, “Layout” reported that the online cinemas “Amediateka” and “Kion” cut scenes from the HBO series “The Wire” that revealed the homosexuality of one of the main characters. It was also reported that the online cinema Kion removed almost all scenes with a trans person from the Twin Peaks series. Another Russian online cinema, Amediateka, has replaced the colors of the LGBTQ+ flag in at least two series on its platform.
