According to a new study published in the European Heart Journal, the timing of drinking may influence the benefits of coffee. Scientists have found that the drink has the greatest beneficial effect on those who drink it in the morning, while those who drink coffee in the afternoon receive less benefit. The Guardian reports this.
An analysis of the medical indications for coffee consumption showed that those who drink coffee in the morning have a 16% lower risk of dying from any disease and a 31% lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease over a 10-year period. But a comparison of medical data between non-coffee drinkers and those who drank coffee after lunch showed that the death rate was about the same.
There is a healthy dose of coffee. It reduces the risks of cancer, diabetes and Parkinson's disease. When does it start to cause harm? Society 8 minute read
“It is not so much important whether you drink coffee at all or in what quantities, but what time of day you drink it. We don't usually take time into account in our dietary recommendations, but maybe we should start thinking about it in the future,” said Professor Lu Qi of Tulane University in New Orleans.
For the study, researchers looked at data from 40,725 adults, including diet and coffee consumption. All of these people participated in the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 1999 and 2018. About 36% of them drank coffee in the morning, and 16% of them drank coffee later in the day. The study's findings were also confirmed in a smaller group of 1,463 people who completed a one-week detailed nutrition survey.
The study found that people who drank coffee in moderation in the morning were generally less likely to die from any disease than those who drank coffee in the afternoon and afterwards. Scientists believe that drinking coffee after lunch disrupts circadian rhythms and the production of hormones such as melatonin. This, in turn, affects sleep, inflammatory processes in the body and other factors that can negatively affect the functioning of the heart.

At the same time, a meta-analysis of 112 studies showed that it is safe for health to drink no more than four to five cups of coffee per day. While coffee may have health benefits and reduce the risk of diseases such as cancer and diabetes, there is still limited data on how caffeine affects children, and drinking coffee may be associated with an increased risk of low birth weight.
