The suspect tried to escape along the railroad tracks, and traffic in the city was stopped for some time, then he was detained .

Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann said the attacker was a 28-year-old citizen from Afghanistan. According to him, the suspect came to Germany in 2022 and applied for asylum. However, he then withdrew the application and the procedure was stopped. Herrmann added that the attacker was undergoing psychiatric treatment.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called the attack an "unimaginable act of terrorism." “I'm tired of the fact that every few weeks we have these acts of violence - committed by people who essentially came here to find protection. Misunderstood tolerance is completely out of place here. Authorities must urgently find out why the attacker was still in Germany at all. Conclusions must be drawn immediately from the data obtained - talking is not enough,” the chancellor said.

Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Soeder called today a “terrible” day for the entire state and expressed hope for a speedy recovery of the victims.
