After Donald Trump returned to power, Ukrainian officials resumed attempts to get from the West to use frozen Russian assets to finance weapons supply. About this writes The Washington Post with reference to several officials.
It is reported that Kyiv hopes to convince the new US president to overcome European resistance to this step.

The Washington Post recalled that Ukraine has long been achieving a complete confiscation of almost 300 billion dollars of reserves of the Central Bank of Russia, which have been frozen in Western countries since February 2022. The return of Trump, who focused on the end of the war, “revived this topic,” the newspaper writes.
According to the publication, Kyiv expects that Trump, who is already striving to reduce foreign assistance, will like an alternative source of arms financing. The proposal has acquired new relevance against the background of increased uncertainty regarding the military support of Ukraine by the United States.
However, the proposal for the confiscation of Russian assets has little chance without wider European support - according to European officials, countries such as Belgium, Germany and France remain one of the most ardent opponents of this idea. They fear that confiscation of assets can create a precedent that will entail litigns or hold sovereign funds and central banks from investment.
Nevertheless, they reported that they did not exclude the possibility of changing the situation if there are difficulties in ensuring new financing of Ukraine or if these assets may become a factor in future negotiations on the end of the war.
Sanctions against Russia put a dilemma before Europe .
“Trump is able to change the position of more skeptical countries. <...> That is why we need his help to convince our partners that the transfer of Russian assets is the necessary tool to complete this war. We firmly believe that it is President Trump that can change the situation, ”said Irina Mudra, deputy head of the Office of the President of Ukraine.
According to the senior researcher at the Institute of International Economics, Peterson Jacob Kirkegora, Ukrainian officials expect that Trump will help them to crank this deal if they offer him to use frozen Russian assets to purchase American weapons.
“This is a completely obvious deal. And they would really like Trump to accept this argument and actually tell the Europeans: “If you want me to continue to supply weapons to Ukraine, let's buy it at the expense of Russian assets. In fact, this is what people see in Trump a political opportunity, ”he said.
Moscow previously called the plan to use its assets “theft of our money” and promised legal consequences.
