"Good for democracy." The White House is going to offer Ukraine to hold elections until the end of 2025

Special envoy of the US President in Ukraine and Russia Keith Kellogue said Kyiv should be held by parliamentary and presidential elections.

In the last days, Kelloglog and other representatives of the White House, according to Reuters sources, were discussing whether it was necessary to push Ukraine to hold the elections during the initial truce with Russia, which, as the US President Donald Trump, calculates, will be concluded in the coming months. If the elections are held, the interlocutors of the agency said, their winner will be able to bear responsibility for negotiations on a long -term peaceful agreement.

At the same time, Reuters said, the Trump administration has not yet decided whether to insist on a preliminary agreement on a ceasefire, and only then work on a longer peace treaty.

The White House, the agency’s interlocutors added, until formally he proposed the authorities of Ukraine to hold elections before the end of the year. Reuters notes that Kyiv’s reaction to such a proposal is difficult to predict. Earlier, the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky repeatedly said that the elections will not be held during the war.

• According to the laws of Ukraine, the holding of elections, including presidential and parliamentary, is suspended during the operation of martial law. Martial law was introduced in Ukraine in February 2022 after the invasion of the troops of the Russian Federation. Its action is regularly extended. Due to martial law, the elections of the Verkhovna Rada were not held, scheduled for October 2023, and the presidential elections, which in peacetime were supposed to be held in March 2024.
