Nicolas Sarkozy put an electronic bracelet to the former President of France - this is a verdict in the case of corruption

The former President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy, put on an electronic bracelet as part of a sentence in the case of corruption issued in 2021. About this on February 7 writes Le Monde.

Over the next year, 70-year-old Sarkozy can leave the house only from 8 a.m. to 8 pm. In the days of court hearing in his new criminal case, this period will be extended until 21:30. Le Monde calls the wearing of a bracelet “an unprecedented measure” regarding the former head of state.

In March 2021, the court recognized Sarkozy to be guided by influence and corruption, due to the fact that in 2014 he tried to bribe a judge to receive information about the investigation of the case of illegal financing of his 2007 election campaign. The former president was given a year of real imprisonment and two years conditionally, but instead of the prison he was allowed to serve a deadline, but with an electronic bracelet.

In 2023, Sarkozy lost his appeal, and in December 2024 the decision was approved by the Cassation Court. The former president insists on his innocence, his lawyers intend to file a complaint with the ECHR.

  • In January, the court began to consider one more case against Sarczya. He is accused of obtaining illegal funding for the 2007 election campaign from the budget of Libya, headed by Muammar Gaddafi. Sarkozy, who in 2011 was one of the most active supporters of foreign intervention in Libya, denies guilt.
  • Sarkozy was president of France from 2007 to 2012.
