The Trump administration will send "low-risk" migrants to the men's prison at Guantanamo Bay in occupied Cuba, CBS News reported, citing two anonymous officials and internal documents.

At the same time, Trump previously promised to send the “worst” migrants to Guantanamo - dangerous criminals and suspected gang members. However, the American television channel learned that the new administration wants to send people without serious criminal records or with no history of offenses to Guantanamo.

Officials interviewed by CBS News said migrants without a criminal record who are subject to deportation fall into the “low risk” category.

As reported by CBS News, a Department of Homeland Security spokesman later confirmed the channel's information about sending migrants without a criminal record to Guantanamo Bay. “All of these individuals committed the crime of entering the United States illegally,” a department spokesman said.

The sending of migrants to Guantanamo has drawn criticism from human rights groups. They accused the Trump administration of using the naval base as a “legal black hole” to hold migrants incommunicado and demanded that detainees be given access to legal counsel.

In January, Trump ordered officials to prepare additional facilities at the Guantanamo Bay military base to house "high-value foreign criminals." In total, the Trump administration wants to hold up to 30 thousand undocumented migrants in Guantanamo. The total area of ​​US-controlled Cuba is 117 square kilometers.

Guantanamo Bay prison opened in 2002 after the 9/11 attacks and has housed about 780 people since then. Many of them were detained without trial - the prison is not located on US territory, so American laws do not apply in Guantanamo. The prison is known for torture and human rights violations.

The Guantanamo Bay military base is located in the south of Cuba and has existed since 1903, when the United States won the Spanish-American War. Then, under the terms of the peace treaty, the United States leased territory in the bay of the same name. After the 1959 revolution, Cuban authorities demanded that the United States return the territory, but the United States refused to leave the bay.
