Russia and the USA held negotiations in Saudi Arabia - without the participation of representatives of Ukraine and European countries. The delegations headed by the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio talked among themselves for 4.5 hours.
According to the results of the negotiations, the parties agreed to continue work to improve bilateral relations (in particular, to restore the number of diplomatic mission in Moscow and Washington), as well as begin the “process of Ukrainian settlement”. Both representatives of Russia and US representatives positively appreciated negotiations.
The parties also discussed preparations for the meeting of presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. The approval of a specific date was not reported; The assistant to the President of Russia Yuri Ushakov only stated that this meeting "is unlikely to take place next week."
Fox News TV channel with reference to foreign diplomats close to negotiations, said that the United States and Russia developed a three -stage plan for the end of the war. It involves a ceasefire, holding elections in Ukraine and only after that - the signing of a final peace agreement. Lavrov said that he did not see this information.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky visited Turkey, where he met with its President Recep Erdogan. After Turkey, Zelensky was supposed to go to Saudi Arabia (in Kiev it was stated that this visit was in no way connected with the negotiations of Russia and the USA), but he said that he was carrying a trip to mid -March.
On the eve of Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine does not intend to recognize agreements that can be reached in the negotiations of Russia and the USA. The Reuters source said that the special representative of Trump in Ukraine Kit Kellog will go to Kyiv in the evening.
Cyril (Moscow). My main fears are that Putin will not go to reconciliation. The war in the last year is relatively successful for Russia (in fact, monstrous in terms of the number of victims, but probably “upstairs” come only bravura reports on the seized territory). The President of Russia is stubborn enough to strive for a “final” victory, and it is quite possible that no US settlement options will arrange him. The leaders of Western countries have repeatedly expressed another fear: if the truce is only a pause, and a new war will begin after a few months or years? In any case, Putin is unpredictable and difficult to count on his prudence. But this does not mean that peace negotiations are not needed, because there are no alternatives. Any world is better than war, and the fact that now there are calls to stop bloodshed, and not continue it, inspires hope. Caution-it is difficult to trust Putin or Trump, and all, one way or another, in their hands-but still hope. Having crossed the fingers, we are waiting for the “agreement”. And what else remains?
