In recent months, representatives of Russia and the United States have met in Switzerland, where they held unofficial negotiations in Ukraine, Reuters writes with reference to sources.
The interlocutors of the agency said that such meetings have been held since the victory of Donald Trump in the presidential election on November 5, 2024. They called these meetings a “side channel” for some contacts in the transition period.
It was reported that the negotiations knew a small circle of advisers to the American president, and the details of the past meetings remain unknown, as well as whether representatives of Ukraine were present at them. Sources of the agency note that one of these meetings was held in Geneva during the Munich Security Conference.
One of the interlocutors of Reuters described secret negotiations as “unofficial diplomacy” - this term denotes informal meetings that are more likely to nominate ideas, and not at the development of specific sentences.
The first official negotiations since the beginning of a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine have passed between Moscow and Washington on February 18 in the capital of Saudi Arabia Er-Riyada. The Russian delegation was represented by the head of the Foreign Ministry, Sergei Lavrov, Presidential Assistant Yuri Ushakov and the general director of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, Kirill Dmitriev. The US was attended by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, presidential adviser to Mike Waltz and Special Supervisor of the Head of State in the Middle East, Steve Willian.
