The US authorities are discussing the possibility of disconnecting Ukraine’s access to the Starlink satellite system if Kiev refuses the transaction on rare -earth metals, Reuters reports with reference to three sources familiar with the situation.
According to the agency’s interlocutors, this topic began to be discussed after the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky refused to sign the first version of the agreement.
One of the sources noted that this issue was discussed at a meeting between Zelensky and Special Supervisor of US President Kitat Kelllog on February 20.
Reuters writes that Ukraine threatens the “inevitable shutdown” from Starlink, if the agreement on fossils is not reached.
“Ukraine works on Starlink. They consider him their polar star. The loss of Starlink ... It would be a huge blow, ”said one of the sources of the agency.
The potential agreement on fossils was discussed in several versions. According to Reuters, on February 12, the head of the US Ministry of Finance Scott Immorta brought the first version of the document to the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky to Kyiv.
The full document was first published in the Clash Report telegram channel on February 17. The authenticity of the publication was confirmed by the sources of several European media. The agreement regulates issues related to Washington returning to Kyiv through the use of rare earth and other metals. In particular, the United States can take 50% of the current income of Ukraine from resource production and 50% of the cost of production licenses by third parties.
Washington also can get pre -emptive right to buy export resources and almost full control over most of the raw material sector of the Ukrainian economy. At the same time, the transaction does not give Kyiv any security guarantees.
