The Ministry of Defense of Syria on the morning of March 10 announced the completion of the "military operation against the remains of the overthrown regime on the Syrian coast."
There is still no complete data on the number of victims, and they are unlikely to appear soon. According to the Syrian monitoring center for compliance with human rights, in the period from March 6 to 9, pro -government forces committed 39 mass executions and many individual, killing a total of at least 973 people. Given the combat losses on both sides, the total number of documented victims is 1454 - but this, obviously, is only preliminary data.
Judging by the numerous videos that continue to spread in social networks and in groups in Telegram and WhatsApp, the dead and wounded are mainly men of young and middle -aged.
Mass murders began in response to the uprising of the Alavites, to which the former President of Syria Bashar Assad belongs. Many Western politicians and media prefer to call them “Assad Loyalists”, and reprisals against them are attributed to some “unidentified forces”. Both are partly explainable. The Alavites community in the power of the Assads was in a privileged position, regardless of how its individual representatives belonged to the regime. And after the overthrow of the Assads, they turned into a discriminated minority - again, regardless of the personal attitude of individual alavites to the new government.
As for the "unidentified forces" who arranged massacres, the Syrian transition government, led by President Ahmad Ash Sharaa, has a kind of alibi. The old security forces are dissolved, the new ones are in the process of formation. There are many armed groups in Syria. Some of them have already joined the new security forces; Others are not, although loyal to the sharaa government; The third and completely confront this government.
When on March 6 it became known that Alawit militants made several attacks on the forces of a new regime in the provinces of Latakia and Tartus, many groups went to fight them. It is almost impossible to distinguish among them representatives of the transition government and “voluntary assistants”: both are mainly the Islamist militants, veterans of the civil war, and they have no distinction.
Sharaa, in an appeal to the nation on March 7, called on “all the forces that joined this battle, obey the command” - thereby indirectly admitting that not all participants in the suppression of the Alawit uprising are under his control. On March 9, he created a commission to investigate reprisals against a civilian population. In cases where this commission will recognize the fact of reprisals against civilians, she will always be able to declare that it was not committed by representatives of the authorities, but some unauthorized militants.
The Supreme Commissar of the UN Human Rights Folker Turk made a statement that “killings of entire families, including women, children and poisler fighters”, as well as “Blessless executions on confessional criteria, representatives of the security forces of the transition government and elements related to the previous authorities, are taking place in Syria. The Turk called on the Syrian authorities to immediately conduct an investigation and bring to justice "groups that terrorize the civilian population."

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in his statement condemned "radical Islamic terrorists, including foreign jihadists who killed people in Western Syria." He assured that the United States supports religious and ethnic minorities in Syria, including Christians, Druzov, Alavites and Kurds, and called on the transition government to hold those who arranged a massacre of minority representatives.
Rubio, unlike the Turk, refrained from accusations against the security forces of the transition government.
The service of the external relations of the European Union even condemned "recent attacks on the forces of the transition government, committed, according to reports, pro -Hapesadic elements, as well as any violence against the civilian population." In addition, the EU called on “all external actors” to respect Syria's sovereignty and condemned “any attempts to undermine stability” in the country. This wording, apparently, applies primarily to Israel, which openly intervenes in the situation in Syria and directly supports one of the communities - Druzov.
The joint statement of Syria, Turkey, Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon-also contains an expression of supporting the Syrian government and the condemnation of Israel.
The only public statement by the Russian authorities about events in Syria issued the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued on March 7. It refers to "large -scale clashes" and "a large number of those killed and wounded on both sides." On March 10, the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov, answering questions from journalists, limited himself to the duty expression of “deep concern”.
Representatives of Russia are not only stingy for public statements, but also defiantly do not discuss who is responsible for violence. Several hundred Alavites, mainly women and children, found refuge at the Russian air base Khmeimim in the province of Latakia. They consider Russia as their ally, since she was an ally of the Assads. At the same time, Russia is negotiating with the new Syrian authorities on the preservation of the Khmeimim base and the naval base in Tartus. In such circumstances, she cannot afford to openly stand on one or another side.
The first deputy representative of Russia at the UN Dmitry Polyansky said that Russia and the United States requested urgent closed consultations in the UN Security Council in connection with the situation in Syria. Here the wording itself, which Polyansky chose: Russia and the United States requested together as partners, is noteworthy. It is likely that their position will be one: condemnation of radical Islamists, the assignment of responsibility for violence against the civilian population, a call to the transition government to restore order. And between the lines-a hint of President Sharaa that he is actually also a radical Islamist (a native of Al-Keda) and, in which case, he can be remembered.
The only state that directly entrusted the responsibility for the murder of the civilian population to the Syrian authorities was Israel. The Minister of Defense Israel Katz said: “Julani [the military pseudonym, which Sharaa used before the coming to power] replaced the [jihadist] robe to [a secular] costume [...]. Now he took off the mask and showed his true face-the face of the al-Keda terrorist-jihadist, who makes terrifying acts against the civilian population. ”
Katsu was echoed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Gideon Saar in the comment of Bild: “Julani people mercilessly exterminate their own people - citizens of the so -called“ new Syria ”.”

In addition to the Alawites, local Christians became the goal of the Islamitist militants. In American social networks, a shaft of publications is growing with a common message "Muslims kill Christians in Syria." He was raised by the conservative publicist Tucker Carlson. He wrote : “Assad defended Christians. The weaker the Assad became, the more Christians died. [...] Now that Assad was overthrown, many remaining Christians are cruelly killed, and their shrines are defiled. ”
Sharaa really needs the support of Western leaders, especially the lifting of sanctions to launch the economic restoration of Syria. It is publicly dissociated from the most extremist forces. And the Western leaders, obviously, really want to believe him: none of them are interested in either the new round of the Civil War in Syria or in its transformation into a jihadist state. On the other hand, Sharaa needs the support of the Syrian Islamists: he is one of them, and his power is being held on them. Is one compatible with the other, unclear.
