The authorities of Kyrgyzstan have brought new charges against members of the Social Democrats party and its leader Temirlan Sultanbekov, who in mid-February 2025 completed a 100-day hunger strike, which began as a protest against the persecution of his comrades and the case against the party for “vote buying”.
The lawyer of three members of the party - Temirlan Sultanbekov, Irina Karamushkina and Roza Turksever - Aibek Turduev said that at the end of the investigation into the case of “vote bribery” new charges appeared against his clients - violation of the financing of the election campaign and fraud.
The lawyer noted that there is still no evidence of guilt in the first case, but now there are “victims” of fraud. In his opinion, this was done in order to keep the oppositionist in prison.
On February 25, 2025, a delegation of the European Parliament arrived in Kyrgyzstan, headed by the Chairman of the Human Rights Subcommittee, Munir Saturi. According to him, authorities in Bishkek assured him that “ the independence of the judiciary will be respected and the leader of the KFOR will have the right to a fair trial .”
The day before the parliamentarians’ visit, the case against the Social Democratic Party was classified as “secret”, which is why the lawyers of the accused could not speak openly about violations that were committed during the trial, as well as during the maintenance of the policy: ess.
The Kyrgyz authorities also continue to put pressure on other KFOR members. On February 25, at the Ak-Zhol border post, security forces detained Stalbek Akmatov, who was returning from Almaty to Bishkek.
Prior to this, on February 13, 2025, KFOR member Farhad Baabiev was also detained and placed in custody for two months. He was charged under Part 3 of Article 278 of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic, which “provides for liability for calls for active disobedience to the legal demands of the authorities, riots and violence against citizens .”
In November, police raided the headquarters of the Social Democrats in Bishkek, after which security forces distributed audio recordings of a telephone conversation, during which, according to police, votes were bribed at 1,000 soms each. Representatives of the party report that the discussion was about the wages of agitators. Due to the criminal case, the Bishkek Territorial Election Commission canceled the registration of the Social Democrats in the elections.
In December, the European Parliament condemned the persecution of Temirlan Sultanbekov in Kyrgyzstan and passed a resolution in support of the politician. Earlier, the international human rights organization Human Rights Watch issued a statement about the persecution of political opponents by the authorities in Kyrgyzstan and called for defending fundamental human rights and freedoms in the country: “The administration of President Sadyr Japarov systematically suppresses dissent. […] This is not the first time the administration has tried to neutralize opposition parties,” the organization said in a statement.
