US and Russian officials are expected to meet today, March 12, to discuss peace talks on the war in Ukraine, Reuters reports. It is not specified what the composition of the delegations of both countries will be. At the same time, US President Donald Trump announced that he would talk with Vladimir Putin “this week.”
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova also said that she does not rule out negotiations between the countries in the next few days. In addition, according to Interfax, on March 11, a telephone conversation took place between the head of the SVR Sergei Naryshkin and the Director of the CIA John Ratcliffe, during which they “ discussed issues of interaction between the two intelligence services in areas of common interest and the resolution of crisis situations .”
These statements come against the backdrop of negotiations between the United States and Ukraine in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia). As a result, Ukraine agreed to introduce a 30-day ceasefire if Russia introduces a similar regime. In addition, the United States announced the resumption of military supplies to Ukraine and the exchange of intelligence with the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
The deal on “rare minerals” was also agreed upon at the level of the Ukrainian and US Treasury ministries, and Trump said he could hold another meeting with Zelensky at the White House.
Moreover, as the office of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky later reported, discussions on the introduction of a ceasefire will begin next week, that is, from March 17 to 23. “ After this meeting, the key today lies with the Russian side. And the whole world will see who wants peace and who doesn’t want it and only talks about it ,” said the head of Zelensky’s office, Andriy Yermak.
The results of the negotiations were supported by a number of American officials from the Trump team, as well as European politicians and officials in Ukraine, including French President Emmanuel Macron, the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the head of European diplomacy Kaya Callas.
In Russia, the reaction to the results of the negotiations was not so clear-cut. Thus, Vice-Speaker of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev stated that “ Ukrainians agree with what they are told .”
“ Russia is advancing, and therefore things will be different with Russia. Any agreements (with all the understanding of the need for compromises) are on our terms, not American ones ,” Kosachev said.
Against the backdrop of armistice negotiations entering an active stage, the Russian army launched an active offensive in the Kursk region. The Russian Ministry of Defense states that the army managed to regain control of more than 100 square kilometers of territory and 12 settlements. The Ukrainian side, represented by the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Alexander Syrsky, confirms the retreat of the Ukrainian army in a number of settlements in the Kursk region. The Russian army is also trying to encircle Sudzha and recapture the city, which is now under the control of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, but so far has been unsuccessful.
