In Moscow, the registry office refused to allow a transgender girl to change her gender marker back to the one prescribed at birth, reports the publication “Guys+”, citing a lawyer. It is noted that the girl received all the necessary conclusions from the state commission, which is controlled by the Ministry of Health.

The registry office decided that the conclusions were obtained illegally and violated Federal Law No. 323.FZ, which states that surgical interventions are required to change gender, although in the case of a particular girl, no operations were required during the transition process, and the marker in the documents was simply changed from WOMAN. to MUSIC It was precisely because of the “lack of surgical interventions” that the department refused to change the gender marker.

“ The registry office is not authorized to evaluate the results of medical research. Civil registry office employees are not doctors. Understanding the genitals is not part of their professional competence. The documents submitted to the commission corresponded to its position. They were adopted on the basis of the law ,” says the girl’s lawyer, Elvira.

In addition, Elvira stated that she knew of at least one other similar case, where a transgender person ended up going to court, which sided with the registry office and refused to change her gender marker. In the summer of 2024, the State Duma of the Russian Federation adopted a law prohibiting the possibility of changing gender markers in documents and gender-affirming medical care. Because of this, changing the gender marker in documents now has to go through the courts.
