On March 8, the American immigration police detained Mahmud Halil, an activist who participated in the missing protests at Columbia University in New York in 2024. His Green Card (residence permit in the USA) was canceled. Halila was going to deport immediately, but the court forbade the court to do this before considering his case.
Khalilu was not charged. The basis for his detention and deportation is the decision of Secretary of State Marco Rubio that his presence in the United States may have “serious negative consequences for foreign policy” (there is such a clause in the Law on Immigration and Citizenship).
US President Donald Trump personally commented on the detention of Halil, calling the activist the Prokhamasovsky radical. Trump emphasized: “This is the first arrest, there will be many more. We know that in Columbia and other universities there are many students who participated in terrorist, anti -Semitic, anti -American activities. ”
Mahmud Halil is a Palestinian by origin. He was born in 1995 in Syria and fled from there with his family in Lebanon in 2013 because of the civil war. He has Algeria citizenship. Halil graduated from American University in Beirut. He worked in various international charitable organizations. In 2022 he entered the Columbia University and moved to the United States on a student visa. In 2023, he married a civilian of the United States, in 2024 he received a green card. His wife is in the last months of pregnancy. As a student of the School of International Relations and Public Policy of the University of Colombian, Khalil trained at the Middle Eastern Agency for the UN for Palestinian refugees (Bapor).
At Columbia University, since October 2023, when the war between Hamas terrorists and Israel began, many groups were activated, including the movement for the breakdown of academic and commercial ties of the university with Israel. This movement is part of the Great International Coalition, known as BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanction), which requires international isolation and sanctions against Israel, accusing it of the Palestinians apartheid. Mahmud Halil was a participant in these protests.

Similar performances took place at many other American universities. They were accompanied by calls for the “global intifada”, the chanting of the slogan “from the river to the sea” , skirmishes, threats and even fights between the missing and prostilly demonstrators, as well as loud dismissals of teachers, mutual accusations in support of the genocide (Palestinians or Israelis), anti -Semitism, Islamophobia, Islamophobia, Islamophobia, Islamophobia, Islamophobia, Islamophobia, Islamophobia, and Islamophobia, and Islamophobia, Islamophobia ideologization of education and encroachment on freedom of speech.
In December 2023, the President of the University, Perm Shafik, was invited to hear the US Congress on anti -Semitic manifestations during these speeches, but she could not be present. The hearing led to the scandal: the presidents of Harvard, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Pennsylvania were not ready to directly say that the calls to the genocide of Jews contradict the rules of educational institutions. Within a month after the hearings, two of the three presidents resigned.
In April 2024, a missile protest tent camp appeared in the campus of Columbia University. Activists took Hamilton Hall for several days-a symbolically significant building, a traditional place of student protests since the struggle for civil equality and against the Vietnamese War in the 1960s. The New York police dispersed the protesters several times and took mass detentions (they soon released everyone).
The President of the University of Permi Shafic was fierce criticism on both sides: the missing activists did not like that she attracted the police to the actions against students and limited the activities of student organizations; Zerailsky - that she did not decisively fight anti -Semitism.
Mahmud Khalil was neither the only nor even the main organizer of the missing student protests at Columbia University. But he became one of the public persons of these protests: he gave interviews and comments to the press - and, unlike some of his associates, did not hide his name and his face.
Iri Sentner, who at that time worked in the University newspaper Columbia Daily Spectator, calls Mahmud Halil the chief representative of the protesters in negotiations with the university administration. He conveyed two basic requirements: a breakdown of the university relations with Israel and an amnesty for all protests.
The meaning of the second requirement was that many protesters were foreigners and were in the United States by student visas, and some, including American citizens, could not pay for training (more than 93 thousand dollars a year) and depended on scholarships. Disciplinary sanctions were fraught with the loss of visas and scholarships. For the same reason, many protesters refused to introduce themselves and put on masks.
Negotiations hit the administration so did not lead to anything. The protests came to naught in part due to the actions of the police, partly due to the fact that the academic year simply ended.
In the summer, the University of Colombian created an institutional equality office, which was supposed to investigate the manifestations of discrimination in the campus, including the manifestations of anti -Semitism and support for the attack of Hamas terrorists on Israel. The activities of Khalil were also checked. He and his wife insisted and continue to insist that he never said anything anti -Semitic and even more so did not call the Jews to the genocide, but only criticized Zionism as an ideology of Jewish superiority.
In August 2024, President of the University of Colombian, Permi Shafik resigned.
By this time, even among American liberals, including politicians, journalists and academic figures, it prevailed that elite universities, including Colombian, began to confuse science with ideology and education with activism. Reform projects began to multiply. An important factor was that some private universities, including Colombian and Harvard, lost large sponsors-for example, Robert Kraft and Leonard Blavatnik , who directly stated that they were resolving financing due to insufficient measures against anti-Semitism.
But the missing student activism did not come to naught. On January 21, 2025, in the New York Women Barnard College, affiliated with Colombian University, two students thwarted a lecture on the history of Israel, calling it “Zionist propaganda”. Students were excluded. The protests followed, which led to a brawl .
Against this background, Donald Trump, who recently took office, signed a decree on the fight against anti -Semitism. It emphasized that the authorities will demand from universities to provide information about student activism, which can be regarded as anti -Semitism and support of terrorism (for example, as an excuse for the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7).
In early March, Trump promised to deprive state funding of any college, school or university, where “illegal protests” are allowed. The authorities have already launched an audit of grants and state contracts of Colombian University.
Mahmud Khalil participated in protests in Barnard. A teacher of Colombian University, an Israeli Shai Davidai, who from the very beginning was a fierce opponent of the Privateine activists, directly turned to the Secretary of State Marco Rubio with a call to deport him. It was March 7th. Halila was detained the next day.
Already from the conclusion, Khalil filed a lawsuit against Columbia University, demanding to prohibit the transfer to the authorities of information about the disciplinary sanctions of students. The meaning is the same - to maintain the anonymity of the protesters and thereby protect them from deportation.
On March 13, about 100 people speaking in support of Halil occupied the Trump Tower foyer in New York. They were dispersed by the police.
