Italian psychologists have found that unborn babies can respond to light configurations that mimic faces. Based on this, scientists suggested that already at the beginning of the third trimester of pregnancy, the fetus may have a primitive mechanism for processing visual stimuli. The science-science channel "Science" drew attention to the study.
For the experiment, scientists from the University of Turin selected 60 women with pregnancy periods 26, 31 and 37 weeks. Researchers applied the light source with three red LEDs located in the vertices of an equilateral triangle to the woman’s stomach. The light was bright enough to enlighten through the stomach and the wall of the uterus. At the same time, using the ultrasound apparatus, doctors watched the movement of the baby's head.

To imitate the human face, scientists turned the triangle with two peaks up so that they looked like two eyes and mouths. Scientists also showed the children an “inverted face” - a triangle standing on one of their sides. It turned out that the children in the womb often turn their heads in the direction of configuration similar to the face, and the inverted triangle is almost not paid attention to .. This allowed scientists to assume that the ability of infants to distinguish faces is formed before birth.
To explain this effect, scientists put forward two hypotheses: social and informational. According to the first assumption, children immediately after birth should maintain interaction with other people to take care of them. According to the second version, this mechanism helps children pay attention to the most informative parts of the body.

The authors of the study said that they still have to find out when it is in children that the ability to respond to the faces and with the ripening of which brain structures are connected.
