Neurologists from the general profile’s Massachusetts Hospital have developed a test Aromha, with the help of which you can evaluate the state of health of the brain by the ability of a person to perceive smells. The scientists described the new method, which should help diagnose dementia at an early stage in the journal Scientific Reports.
As part of the 45-minute Aromha test, participants must guess the smells of substances located under labels on special cards. Patients introduced answers to the web application. Testing can be passed both on your own at home and in the presence of a specialist - these conditions did not have a significant impact on the results.

At the first stage of the Aromha test, the subjects should have determined nine smells: menthol, cloves, leather, strawberries, lilacs, pineapple, smoke, soap and grapes. After removing each label, the participants had to tell how intense the smell was, choose one option out of four, and then answer how confident they are in response.
In the second part of the experiment, there were already 18 smells: nine from the first part, as well as the aromas of coffee, peach, chocolate, orange, mud, banana, lemon, chewing gum and roses. The participants first answered whether each of the smells at the first stage was, and then they should also have called the smell and evaluate their degree of confidence.
At the end, the participants were offered 10 pairs collected from already familiar 18 smells. The subjects had to determine whether the same smells are represented in each of the steam.

Doctors found that the ability to recognize, remember and distinguish smells worsens with age. At the same time, the results of the elderly with mild cognitive disorders were lower than that of their peers without signs of dementia. According to scientists, in the future, their test can be used to predict the development of neurodegenerative diseases.
Earlier, scientists found that people with a sense of smell breathe differently than those who do not have it. The study of Israeli doctors showed that people with a working sense of smell take breath than people with anosmia.
