President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky intends to abandon the US -proposed transaction on Ukrainian rare earth metals. This was US President Donald Trump said to reporters. At the same time, he warned that the rejection of the agreement is fraught with troubles for the Ukrainian leader.
“He is trying to get out of the transaction on rare -earth metals, and if he does it, he will have problems, big problems,” Trump said, adding that Zelensky “wants to be a member of NATO, but he will never be a member of NATO and understands this.”
Earlier, the Western media reported that the Ukrainian side proposed changing the text of the agreement on rare -earth metals, including the US obligation to increase American investment in the Ukrainian economy. At the same time, according to Bloomberg, the latest version of the agreement involved Washington to receive control over all large investments in infrastructure and mining in Ukraine.
This wording caused concern in Kyiv. They suggested that the conclusion of a transaction with the United States in this form threatens the prospects of Ukraine entering the European Union, and will also allow Washington to demand compensation from Kyiv for all military and economic assistance provided to the United States to Ukraine since the beginning of a full -scale Russian invasion in February 2022.
“If the partnership agreement will be adopted, the United States will receive effective control over investment decisions regarding a significant part of the Ukrainian economy, including mining industry, oil and gas, the extraction of the most important minerals, as well as ports, roads and railways,” the agency said.
In turn, The Washington Post wrote that in private conversations, Ukrainian officials sharply criticize the US -proposed deal, calling it “reparations”. According to them, the terms of the transaction look like "Ukraine fought with the United States, lost, was captured and now it must pay lifelong reparations."
At the same time, Bloomberg sources said that "Washington can be open to discuss changes."
