The old “Lada”, a two-year-old, on which in the early nineties I took up the leaf, white, 1974, I went to me after the death of my wife’s father. I divorced my wife, and I stayed with the car. It was a car that Italians gathered at a vase, and sometimes I, in bumps of boasting, told others that I had a foreign car. The car was really distinguished by an extraordinary fortress. Everything worked in it - and heating the rear window, and the stove, and devices on the dashboard. The oil never flowed, gasoline has never consumed more than ten liters per hundred kilometers. The sound of the motor is always even and powerful, bass, reliable. It started well, decisively, from the first turnover of the key. In the morning, going out into the courtyard, I experienced a warm feeling of love for this old reliable car, which devotedly looked at me with my headlights.
I began to do not without fear - to be a taxi driver seemed to me a risky occupation. It was still the beginning of the nineties, when in every newspaper they wrote about robberies, and the murders were committed regularly, as on a schedule. A couple of times I planted with me in the back seat of a friend - a bearded Armenian in a white wide cloak; Inside, under the left sleeve, a loop was sewn. A ax hung in a loop. Thus, I was reliably protected from the rear from anyone who would decide to put a gun to the back of my head or throw a noose around my neck. However, the defense of this kind was to the detriment of my low -budget business. Now customers, looking into the cab and seeing the front of an intelligent neurasthenic with glasses, and behind a cheerful face, overgrown with a black beard, scared a sweet couple ... And I began to ride alone.
I fell in love with this work, which often did not seem to me with work, but it seemed-a long journey, a hallucination in reality.
Moscow looks like an ocean in which you can swim like a fish. (You just need to be fish ...) I swam - several times for the day I drove through the center shining with lights, where a thick crowd ended with a unified selfish soul on the sidewalks, circled along the deserted embankments in the Paveletskaya and “Avtozavodskaya” area, where factory fences stretch and lies in a dull imprint, looped around. The quiet lanes of the Zamoskvorechye pulled out into the expanse of the Leningrad highway, to the parks and solid houses of the Stalin era, from one of which, like a white flag of surrender, a huge poster was thrown out with the words: "This apartment is sold." Everything has changed. Instead of the unpretentious cafes of my youth, which once seemed so spectacular, such cool establishments, night clubs shining with lights opened, at the door of which stupid guards stood in uniforms. In the place of the North innocent cafe, where I once, believing terribly vicious, sat with the girls, eating ice cream poured with chocolate and drinking champagne, now there was a nightstand, at the door of which the shaved naps of the owners of life flickered, their red jackets, as well as evil and sleek faces of prostitutes. On Mayakovskaya, where the arshin letters once on a flat roof stood communism-this is the youth of the world, now in black evening air flashed the letters Philips in blue, which causes goosebumps. And I, alone with a warm cab, illuminated by devices, moving in the stream, looking for a client, flying and crawling from the end to the end, looking at new stores, for some reason muttered under his breath: "Where there was a table, there is a coffin."

In New Moscow, Moscow, the nineties began, there was something surreal. It was like a mirage, a beautiful elegant decoration in the spirit of Benois, slowly and solemnly lowered from heaven directly in thick snow. All these new restored and painted banks mansions, with faceted lanterns above high solemn doors, shining shops with pineapples in windows, all these clothing salons with the idiotic names “Caligula Plus” or “Excuisite Equipment”, all these sophisticated hotels with gently illuminated gardens and deeper gardens and deep Black chairs for customers who do not part with radiotelephones even in the toilet - all this was a coffin for me. And I hated him.
Here's what is important in this story of a amateur taxi driver, for whom the movement is all, and the goal, that is, money, is nothing: in order to love or hate, you do not need to enter into any relationship with the outside world. This is useless. This is even superfluous. It is quite possible to do without anyone.
A person spending evenings in a dark cabin, illuminated by devices, gradually gets used to loneliness and learns to do himself.
But what about people whose faces look into the cab through the right front glass - people with diverse, never repeated addresses, eternally traveling from Tagan to the falcon, from Nakhimovsky to Suvorovsky, from home to a clinic, and then from a restaurant to a girlfriend? What are they? They are nothing. They are like figures in a giant chess party, and this is how they should be treated. But who - you ask the next worthless question, the question that only interferes with the story - plays these complex chess, who sees the megalopolis on top, who is able to turn over four thousand streets and eight million autonomously moving fers, horses, pawns and elephants? In what position does the mat attack? And - the most important thing - who does he play against? Work - no, pastime - a taxi driver contribute to philosophy.
At Dobryninskaya, I slowed down and rolled in the stream slowly, looking for prey. There are places in which I am lucky, yes, quite definite places in which a person with a raised hand awaits me. I thought a lot about it and always experienced something like an enthusiastic bewilderment, which always covers me when I think about the inexplicable complexity of life. What should happen that my car appears at Dobryninskaya or below Tverskaya exactly at that second when a black -haired girl in a red shining cloak or a flashed gentleman in a felt hat stood on the edge of the sidewalk and raised a hand? What diverse and amazing coincidences should occur so that my appearance in this place coincides in seconds and the draft movement of the hand of an unfamiliar person, who was at that moment and at this point of space decided to catch a taxi?

However, we will return to the narrative - at Dobryninskaya, I slowed down in anticipation of a passenger who is always waiting for me here at seventh hour, in a crowd stirring from the metro and, like a black bubble protoplasm, enveloping shops and stalls. Who will be this passenger this time? A heavy figure arose from dusk. I slowed down, in the dim light of the winter lanterns a woman with a round face covered with a scarf looked into the cab.
- Where?
For a moment she looked at me. The sky behind her swayed shoulders was dirty, not black, but brown, in yellowish erosion - the uncomfortable sky of the Moscow winter.
“No, driver, I'm sorry, you don’t suit me.”
- What? I spoke with brief interjections and questions, as always, when I completely reincarnated into a taxi driver. Yes, I spoke briefly and decisively, maybe even contemptuously - this is one of my appearance that I change depending on the situation and mood. Actually, by nature, I am more verbose than lapidar.
- No, you don't come up. Her face was without eyebrows, naked as a knee, with an upturned nose, the smiling face of a broken woman, in which, however, for a moment, something terrible was seeing. It happens to me when I suddenly open a different vision. And then it did not even open, but opened - the damper to hell, so to speak, - and I saw a round shameless mask, looking at me with a false smile.
Vile, unbearable, acute falsity looked from this face. But my other vision immediately became dry, slammed, the foreboding went away, and again it was an ordinary broken woman. Nevalyashka. Cook. And her smile was still filthy.
- Well, what else?
“I need good gentlemen for good entertainment,” she explained sweetly, having experienced, however, doubts about me. Or maybe there was no doubt - these creatures are always good physiognomists, and there is no need to be a good physiognomist here: I do not look like a good gentleman looking for sebaceous adventures - neither the appropriate face, nor the corresponding car - but my interrogative, or an incomprehensible, but in fact the missing gaze moved it to explain. -You see, for ha-a-arcture entertainment (meaningful view of the eye).
“Close the door,” I said empty and impersonally, like a polite automatic, and, without waiting for the reaction, gave gas. The engine roared. She handed it back, the door slammed shut, I set sail. I was driving in the stream again, at that time, Lyusinovka was always clogged with cars that go south to Warsaw in a thick continuous stream, and I experienced something like annoyance, annoyance for the fact that instead of a winning map I had a dummy. Upon unsuccessfully the evening began. This cook-breeder, this snub-shaped shameless bitch hunting on the edge of the sidewalk, took the place of my client, who was ready to give me fifty rubles, my client, who was one step behind her and did not have time to me. Something means that tonight I went up in the magnificent mechanism of life about which I had the highest concepts. “And so, my friend,” I told myself (I sometimes called myself a friend, sometimes a moron, but more often an idiot), “but so, well, the cloths got into the clocks, and they overshadowed, lost their ways.”
Something was in the work of a taxi driver, which completely, absolutely suited me.
Strange, but in the work of a taxi driver and a historian there is something in common. Both outsiders.
I liked to read thick volumes with documents of past eras, to observe from the side of the birth, development and death of cities, countries, civilizations. Once upon a time, the heroes gave battles, divided the laurels and reproaches, went into exile, died in glory or obscurity, lie in mausoleums and in mass graves ... And only then, in the evening after the battle , a historian appears and passes by a leisurely step. I did not participate in anything, I did not answer for anything, I just looked from the outside and therefore was free, absolutely free. Achilles and Ajax, this is your world, I give it to you without resistance, this is your struggle, I am only a connoisseur of heroic deeds, only a passerby. So I felt when I was a historian, and I felt something similar, sitting at the wheel of a taxi. People were sitting in the cabin, who did not care, they arose - they appeared - from the chaos of the city, with my personal, unique features, I could examine them and talk with them for a quarter of an hour or half an hour, and then they disappeared in the dark chaos of streets, forever.

I have no responsibility for them, I did not want anything from them, had the right not to know their names and surnames, I was free. This freedom of discretion with any living creature attracted me so ...
I did not need anything from them all, only a little money, and the rest did not depend on them. Otherwise, I was the master of everything. All! Each person who planted in my car, without knowing it, became one of the unused opportunities of my life. I hallucinated, I had a relationship with them, relations that did not provide for words and touches, the disinterested relationship of the historian and material, the reader of the novel and his heroes. I had enough two or three views to know a person, to feel his aura, to feel a slight exciting tension. Fantasies bloomed under the walls of my skull with tall trees with a branched crown. Azerbaijani with hard curly hair, in sneakers and a leather jacket, asking if he could smoke, for a short moment seemed to me in a fraternal close to me. We could do things with him in this hostile cold capital, we could carry oval yellow melons on the central market on a truck and sell pink tomatoes in the southwest. Leather jackets, curly wool in the context of colored shirts, knives with wide blades, prudently equipped with blood flow grooves, laryngeal speech, police departments with faded walls, benches, grinning captains: “Well, we will pay chocks?” I hallucinated. Blue old “Volvo-740”, loud laughter of prostitutes, an apartment without furniture, with wallpaper behind the walls, with a stepladder forgotten in the middle of the room, with newspapers on the floor, with a waist on the stove, vodka in faceted glasses, a gold tooth in the mouth of Azerbaijani, laughter, affectionate: “Tanya, take grapes!” - And brutal, rough sex on the floor at the third hour of the morning.
One fantasy behind the wheel ended, the new one began. A woman with two heavy bags that I picked up from the Moscow department, young, tired and beautiful, sat all the way silently, but I had one glance in her face, a quick, thieving, boyish look at her knees to feel her tenderness, which intensified at the moment when she saw the porch of a poor panel-five-five Cherries. The seams between the panels were roughly smeared with black Velcro - Var. I sat looking in her back, putting my hands on the steering wheel, seeing her fourth floor instant with insight, the door inhabited by a leatherette, a kitchen with linoleum swollen on the floor, feeling the fucked air of cramped housing, seeing a carpet on the wall, a folding sofa, covered with an thin, dilapidated material in a flower, slippers, a bathrobe, mirror, mirror A shelf with tubes of a cheap cream, ropes stretched through the bathroom, on which shirts and panties of her husband dry up ... Then he gave gas and left, but there was a feeling of tenderness to an unfamiliar woman.

In the early winter evening - it was dark, and snow went again - I saw on the corner, behind Danilovskaya Square, two girls in jackets. One, lower, with blond hair loose on the shoulders, stood in front with his raised hand, the other, taller, in a round hat with a visor, looked from behind her shoulder. Both were with portfolios. And my car, jumping on the tram tracks, rushed to them, violently blinking an orange turn signal.
- Where?
- Will you take it to Biryulevskaya Street? - The cute face with shiny eyes and chubby, slightly touched silverly flashed with lipstick looked at me.
I figured where it is. I would prefer to go to more pleasant edges now. But I knew that if I refuse them now, then good luck that evening would not be. This is my old, experienced, without failure: never choose the first client, but always agree, whoever he is, no matter how much he offers and wherever he rode.
- How much? - asked with a predatory squint.
- Thirty rubles.
- This is where where?
- We always pay so much! This is not far! Through her shoulder, the second looked in, in a round cartuze, with her eyes down. From under the visor, her eyes looked at me with a hint, significantly.
- Okay, sit down!
And they joyfully climbed into the back seat.
After a second, I heard whispering behind my back, as if two animals had settled there, then a quiet stifled laughter and foil rustling followed. I looked in the mirror: we got comfortable with me there, ate chocolate and looked right in front of me, in my back, in the windshield, on the ruby stop-ogi of the cars walking in front.
Oh, how they probably are good there, in a dark warm car traveling around the evening city, break off the squares of chocolate from the tiles and feel like adult girls who took a taxi ...

- Can you smoke? - after some time one asked. Apparently, they decided to get all the pleasures from life at once.
- Smoke.
Clinking lighters. I heard them drag out, these girls. Then they spoke busily in an undertone.
- Did he meet Alenka?
- Yes. Yesterday. She said they went to the cafe.
- To which? And Boris?
- In our pizzeria. She does not tell him. Does not want to. Why, he says, to injure him?
- Was he by car?
- Yes. He drove behind her, the whole house saw her went out to him. There all the grandmas watched. She left in a foreign car.
- He has the "Ford" old. He took him apart, ”said the one that was taller. I already distinguished them by voices.
“Well, you know, the old one is not old, but your own car ... I like to ride with him.” He drives cool, gives one hundred and twenty in the yards! He has the rights purchased. He told me himself. Ashot made him.
I did not turn around, but still saw them. Why did I need to turn around? I saw their cheap jackets, I saw one and dark eyes of the other, the eyes in which the dull lights of the streets flew and reflected the dull lights of the streets slipped and reflected. I did not turn around, but saw their hands holding cigarettes, and saw a scarlet manicure in the arms of the one that was lower, and there was almost no manicure on her little girl. He erased, disappeared. Small, chubby girlish hands.
I listened to their quiet voices - now these were the voices of not girls at all, just with joyful enthusiastically eating chocolate, but young women involved in complex love relationships. Something was in these voices now soft, velvety, dark ...
My ability to plunge into someone else's life has not surprised me for a long time: everything that happened to others seemed incomparably more real than what happened to me. And more interesting, significant.
Turntable.

Center!
Money?

- How many?
- Fifty.
- For a long time.
- And what?
- A.
