The Conclave chose the new Pope, it became the American cardinal Robert Prevo. This was reported in the Vatican.

Preter accepted the name of Leo XIV. As CNN notes , he was the first pontiff from the USA in history.

“Peace to you all. This is the first greeting of the Risen Christ, a good shepherd who gave his life for God. And I would like this greeting the world to enter our hearts and our families, ”he turned to the people gathered in St. Peter Square.

The funeral took place on April 26. The coffin was put on the square in front of St. Peter's Council, then the funeral rite under the leadership of Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re was passed. After that, the procession began with the coffin of Pope Francis from St. Peter Square to Basilica Santa Maria-Majore, where he was buried. About 200 thousand people came to the funeral. Among the guests were the presidents of the United States, France, Argentina, Brazil, Ukraine, Prime Ministers of Great Britain, Italy, Chancellor of Germany and others.

The burial itself took place in the presence of a narrow circle of people, including several cardinals.

In his will, Pontiff asked to bury himself in a simple tomb without special jewelry.
