The European Union will relieve sanctions from Syria

The European Union decided to lift sanctions from Syria, the head of the EU Foreign Policy Service Kai Callas said on the X social network.

“Over the past 14 years, the EU has always supported the Syrians - and will continue to do it,” said Callas.

Kallas did not specify whether all the sanctions will be lifted at once or this will happen in stages. On the eve of Deutsche Welle, citing diplomatic sources, it wrote that Brussels speak of a “reversible and gradual approach” to relieve sanctions against Damascus and leave the opportunity to cancel extensions.

• On May 13, US President Donald Trumpsaid that he also intends to lift sanctions from Syria.
• Sanctions against Syria by Western countries were introduced when the president of the country was Bashar Assad. In December 2024, he was overthrown and fled to Russia. Former Islamist rebels came to power from the Haiyat Tahrir al-Sham group. They promised that Syria would be a democratic state.
