Monuments to Stalin in Russia began to be erected twice as often
From January to the end of May 2025, more monuments to Joseph Stalin were opened in Russia than in the entire year of 2024, the Agency’s analysis shows.
Details. Federal and regional media reported at least nine unveiled monuments to the Soviet leader in the first five months of 2025. Over the entire past year, the opening of eight monuments was reported.
️ In the calculations, the “Agency” did not take into account the annexed Ukrainian regions. Here, in 2025, a monument to the Soviet leader appeared in Melitopol in May.
️ The authorities initiated the opening of two monuments to Stalin - in Moscow and in the Vologda region. Last year they opened one monument - in Vologda. The remaining cases are initiatives of private individuals and the Communist Party of the Russian Federation.
️ Among the monuments to Stalin opened this year is a bas-relief at the Taganskaya station of the Moscow metro, which was restored secretly.
️ In addition, this year the second monument was opened in the Vologda region: this time the monument appeared in the village of Kaduy. Last year, a monument to Stalin was opened in Vologda : then the monument was ordered by the governor of the region, Georgy Filimonov, who was present at its opening.
Context. The appearance of monuments to Stalin intensified in Russia after 2014, wrote “We Can Explain.” By this year, the pace of construction of monuments had almost doubled. According to the project's calculations, as of October 1, 2023, there were 110 monuments to Stalin in the country, only 9% of which remained from Soviet times. About half, 49 monuments to Stalin, were erected on the initiative of the authorities, the remaining monuments were the initiative of local residents, the study also said.
