
The Federal Service for Supervision of Environmental Management demanded that the court pays compensation for environmental damage from the owners of Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239 tankers, which sank in December in the Kerch Strait.
Shipwrecks led to a large -scale environmental disaster in the Black and Azov Seas. The spill of the transported fuel oil led to the death of animals, the pollution of tens of kilometers of the coast, thousands of people participated in the elimination of the consequences, one of them died. The work will continue at least next year.
Owners of tankers, Kamatransoyil and Volgatransneft refused to pay compensation voluntarily, said in Rosprirodnadzor. “We are entering the trial, since the legal terms for the independent fulfillment of our requirements have come out,” Interfax quotes the head of the department Svetlana Radiova.
In addition to the owners, the lawsuit was filed with another company, Kama Shipping, which has shifted Volgonft-212, said in a message. The total amount of claims amounted to 84.9 billion rubles (more than one billion dollars). It can be significantly reduced in court. In companies, the lawsuit was not commented.
