WSJ: The White House called on the Senate to soften the bill on "crushing" sanctions against Russia

The US presidential administration Donald Trump is trying to force Lindsay Graham Senator Lindsay to mitigate his sanctions against Russia, writes The Wall Street Journal. The senator proposes to introduce restrictions if Moscow refuses peace negotiations.

According to the newspaper, over the past weeks, representatives of the White House were unrelated to the Graham office and called for him to soften the bill. Officials from the Trump administration proposed adding exceptions to the document that would allow the president to choose, with respect to whom restrictions will be introduced, WSJ sources said.

In particular, Graham was offered to replace the word shall (“must”) with may (“maybe”) throughout the text of the bill. Thus, explains the publication, the White House wants to eliminate the mandatory nature of the prescriptions of the document.

Senator Richard Blumental, one of the co -authors of the bill from the US Democratic Party, confirmed that private consultations were underway with the White House. However, he refused to comment on their essence.

Any administration asks to amend loud bills, often striving for the wording that give the president more authority, WSJ notes. “But the abolition of the obligatory nature of the sanctions will make the bill of Graham toothless, the employees said, noting that Trump can already impose sanctions at his discretion,” the article says.

The two -party bill on primary and secondary sanctions against Russia is supported by more than 80 senators. It implies restrictions on high -ranking Russian officials, key sectors of the Russian economy, as well as duties of 500% of imports from countries buying Russian oil products, natural gas or uranium. The authors called these sanctions "crushing."
According to WSJ, Donald Trump fears that the bill may damage his attempts to improve relations between the United States and Russia, which he is trying to combine with the end of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
