Oleg Tinkov and Michael Kalvi have known each other for almost 30 years, and during this time their fate has crossed more than once. They both survived the arrests (by the way, recently Michael released a book on how he was sitting in the Russian pre -trial detention center), fought with cancer and were almost simultaneously forced to abandon successful businesses in Russia. Elizabeth Ossetian (recognized in the Russian Federation as an ino-agent) met with them in Forte-de-Marmi to talk about their new project-the Mexican fintech-unicoride of Plata, which, together with the partners of Kalvi and Tinkov, invested about $ 300 million. How many investments are needed to grow a unicorn, which is attractive to the Latin America market, as well as about about $ 300 Tinkov’s personal expenses, Kalvi cellmates and the departure of the era of foreign investors from Russia. See the entire interview on the channel “This is Ossetian”, and we publish a abbreviated version.
MK: I remember that several days passed after Oleg was forced to sell his share in Tinkoff. I came here, we met with my wives. And Oleg then said that he wanted to focus on a bicycle, health, rest. But Rina told me: “Oleg is a man with huge natural energy. If he does not have a dealing except for a bicycle, he will just go crazy. ”
MK: Yes. I then said: “Oleg, think. The bicycle breaks, if you switch from the tenth speed at once to the first. The same thing can happen to a person. We must slowly slow down. ” And Oleg answered me: “You don’t understand, Mike. You are an investor. You may have ten different projects. And I am either 100% active or in any way. ” A couple of months have passed, Oleg called me: "Mike, can you come to Fort tomorrow?" I said that I have a meeting, I can’t. And you: "Believe me, you need to come." I canceled everything and flew.
The next day, we met here with cool guys, among them were Neri Tollardo and Danil Anisimov from Tinkoff, and began to talk about Mexico. They had a real faith that you can create a business there, repeat part of Tinkoff's success. We spent two days together, discussed issues and after that we decided to move. Oleg and I decided to support them, they were the drivers of the project.
O.T.: This is a little more complicated. I will start from afar, but exclusively. When I was still a Tinkoff shareholder and lived in London, I called our CFO Sergey Pirogov, he says: “You know, we took a man from Morgan Stanley - Neri. He now represents Tinkoff to the investors. I say: "Interesting, let it come in, chat."
We met with Neri, walked around the park. And an hour later I realized - the guy is really cool. He speaks well in Russian (he studied at Anglo-american School, in the same place, where my children are), freely-Italian, in Spanish and, of course, in English.
I immediately thought that he could be a replacement for Oliver at the CEO post. Then we already began to diverge from the views with Oliver. True, Pavel Fedorov later appeared - he was more Mature , the former COO Rosneft and Norilsk Nickel, so we chose it.
O.T.: I said Neri: "You need to go to Moscow." She and his wife Alei came to our dinner, she was pregnant, I persuaded them. As a result, they moved. We appointed Neri the head of new businesses - in fact, he became the fifth person in the company.
And I already had a villa in Mexico. I built houses in different countries - France, Italy, Russia - but the best experience was with Mexico. Architects, lawyers, builders - it was simple with them. I realized that this country is cool, you can do business there.
In February 2022, literally the day before the visit of Michael, Neri, Pavel Fedorov and Oliver Hughes flew to Mexico to prepare Feasibility Study . We talked with the local Central Bank, searched for partners. Everything went to ensure that Tinkoff opened in Mexico.
O.T.: No, Tinkoff himself.
MK: All this happened before the sanctions and before the start of the war.
O.T.: We were going to open in three countries: in the Philippines, in Indonesia and in Mexico. In the Philippines, we almost completed the deal, in Indonesia signed an agreement on the purchase of 55% of the bank for $ 200 million. This was just three days before the start of the war. They just did not have time to transfer the money. We really planned to launch international expansion, and Mexico was one of the key directions.
I knew the country well - I had a villa there, I watched it for a long time. I remember we walked with the team in Kabo-san-Lukas-huge waves, a Pacific Ocean. Locals do not climb there, the Americans - even more so. And Neri with whom we arrived suddenly says: “It’s hot something,” and jumps into the ocean. Waves are 3-4 meters, not a joke. I think: "Another plus, brave, well done."
Then we go further, towards the Mexicans, he to them: "Hola!" - And calmly chatting with them. I am: "Are you saying in Spanish?" “Yes,” he answers. And I immediately: "That's it, you are CEO" Tinkoff Mexico "." Oliver Hughes, of course, objected: "He is still too young." But I already decided everything for myself.
And then the war began. Everyone began to leave Russia. Neri flew to Italy. Later he flew to me, we walked for a long time, and he said that he wanted to continue working on a Mexican project, but we need funding.
He gathered the team - Danila, Sasha Bro, a few more guys (Andrey Shelekhin, Anton Tarasenko, David Isahanyan). They flew again to Mexico, looked at the market. Some at Tinkoff were then offended, they say, they stole the idea. But what is the idea if you are now under sanctions and cannot do anything?!
MK: By that time, our Baring Vostok funds have already decided to leave Russia. But we understood that it would be a very long process. And because of the structure and presence of large international investors, it was impossible to invest. Therefore, we created a new fund - already in the USA, without the participation of Russian partners. We were divided: Russian colleagues remained under the East Investment brand, and we are Baring Ventures, this is a purely project Baring Ventures. Then they raised the SEED round, about 20 people participated from top managers, now more than 100.
OT: It is important that all the fauners invested their own money in the project, Skin in the Game put it. Unlike the Case of Paraborsky.
O.T.: They are real faunters, real investors. Because I personally have a model, when people do not put their money, I really do not like it. Then they cannot be called real faunters, it seems to me. But I could be wrong.
MK: Yes. Investigated by my family, Oleg's family, as well as several American venture funds. So the fund was formed through which we launched a Mexican subsidiary. Together with the team - at first 20 people, now already 100.
O.T.: It is important to clarify - when Michael says “100 people”, he means shareholders. In total, the company is now 2000 people, of which 700 Russians.
MK: 2000 Total people.
O.T.: About 100 people live in Mexico. Another 500 are employees in offices in Cyprus, Serbia and Barcelona.
MK: This all information is absolutely transparent to auditors and regulators. But, as in the case of other private venture companies, the composition of the shareholders (CAP Table) is not disclosed until the exchange to the exchange. This is a standard practice.
O.T.: What are 10? There are projects that start for $ 10 million for six years, and nothing happens. Today, more than $ 800 million, as We Speak has already been invested in the company.
At the start, Michael and I, our two families, as well as the first 20 investors invested about $ 300 million.
MK: Plus several small venture funds - they also connected at an early stage.
O.T.: It was still a SEED-round. Then, on the round of A, large players came - Kora Capital, Mor Capital and a number of investors who do not advertise their participation, but you definitely know them.
MK: They raised $ 160 million, it became the basis of our estimate of $ 1.5 billion.
MK: estimated at $ 1.5 billion.
O.T.: A lot has been invested in the company. It is easy to calculate that there is one capital - $ 450 million.
O.T.: Yes. At one time, Tinkoff became one of the first FinTech in the world. Then this model began to successfully copy - Nubank, Revolut, Chime and others. Although formally the first was Netbank in the USA in the Dotcom era, he quickly went bankrupt. And the first one who survived without departments, with the collection of deposits and so on, is Tinkoff. Perhaps there were similar projects in China, but they developed under the wing of Alibaba and similar giants. And we had it standalone - from scratch, without the support of large ecosystems.
MK: Many Fintekhs were then afraid to turn into a real bank - with a balance, license, regulation. It seemed to them that it was easier to remain Capital Light - to engage only in payments and to outsour the rest. But it turned out that it did not work. To be a real player, you need a license, compliance and all other Skills to get the confidence of the regulator. Only with this comes the real possibility of financing business through deposits. And youth - she already began to live on the phone, she did not need departments. This became clear somewhere in 2013-2014, then everyone began to copy, but many at the same time forgot about loans.
OT: Why, for example, I do not consider Revolut a real bank so far, with all due respect to the [founder] Rale of the Rale, our friend. [Assessment B] $ 45 billion, he is a genius and all that. But for me, Revolut will become a bank when he has a credit business.
O.T.: Credit business. This bank has at least 30% of income - from lending. Revolut, for example, is only about 3%.
MK: But Revolut is an excellent company.
MK: We are also investors, yes.
MK: Not at the very beginning. And it was not my personal initiative - this is a team from the Russian office of Baring Vostok noticed the company and invited me to invest. We carefully studied it, decided to enter, and, I must say, they were right. I am grateful to them.
MK: So far, yes. Because without a banking license you can not launch many products: debit cards, deposits, etc. But credit cards can be launched without a license if you finance them from your own funds.
In parallel, we decided to get a banking license. In Mexico, this is a long and serious way, takes about two years. You should have absolutely transparent capital and all other processes. At the same time, we began to build a system of risk management, improve scoring, pricing algorithms, adapt the product itself-so that it is both popular and profitable. This stage took about a year.
When we were convinced that the product was working, we began to grow a portfolio. They connected credit financing through funds and began to grow actively.
Today, Plata already has 1.5 million customers on credit cards.
MK: Yes. Now we are issuing about 165 thousand new cards per month.
O.T.: We are disposed of. To make it clearer: Plata grows about 2 times faster than Tinkoff at an early stage. Today's Plata Plus-minus metrics correspond to the level at which Tinkoff Bank was in 2022 when I sold my share. Especially on credit cards.
Tinkoff, if we recall, had a record month - about 170-200 thousand active users of credit cards. Now we are doing 160 thousand in Plata, and this is a very impressive result. Tinkoff took three years on a millionth card: start in 2007, a millionth card-in 2010. And in Plata we reached this in about a year and a half. A completely different speaker.
MK: Not quite so. We have a mixed team - Russian and Mexican. We have many strong Mexican managers, with different backgrounds and from different industries. Without them, we would not be able to build an effective business. Business culture, methods of communication, solving problems among Mexicans and Russians-are very different. And this must be taken into account.
OT: In general, everyone who is “at the front” is a completely Mexican team. The numbers themselves say: out of 2000 people we have about 700 from Russia. And mostly Russians work in a backend - these are Data Science, infrastructure, servers. But marketing, GR, finances, lawyers are all Mexican colleagues.
MK: And the operating unit is also completely Mexican.
O.T.: Just bring 100 Russians to another country and “do business” will not work. Well, you can, of course, start something, this was my idea. And, unfortunately, I must reflect it, probably for the last time here. You need exclusives.
When Neri and Danil came here, I called Pavel Fedorov, Oliver Hughes, Artem Yamanov [former Tinkoff Bank top manager, co-founder of the German banking platform Vivid Money]-everyone with whom we worked together. I was a major shareholder in Vivid, by the way. The name Vivid, by the way, I came up with, but it doesn’t matter.
I told them: let's create a holding in Dubai. I agreed with Yuri Milner, he said: "I multiply everything that you will collect by three and give it." We almost bought a bank for $ 200 million. The plan was like this: Oliver goes to Jakartov, Fedorov and [George] Chesakov - to the Philippines, Neri - to Mexico. I invest with Michael through Baring. We connect Milner, someone else. We create international fintech-holding in three countries: Mexico, Philippines, Indonesia. And maybe in Germany through Vivid.
O.T.: Not just beautiful. If everything worked out, today this “shop” would cost $ 10 billion. But, alas, life is not perfect. As I said, vanity is the greatest sin. Each has ambitions, resentment, the desire to prove something to someone. As a result, everyone dispersed.
I still have a great relationship with Salmon, I support them [Fintech-Service launched at the Philippines in 2022 the natives of Tinkoff Bank Pavel Fedorov, Georgy Chesakov, as well as Raffi Montemayor. - approx. The Bell]. But Oliver broke, for me it is a big pain. Yamanov also went his own way. Everyone wants to prove that they are cool in themselves - to themselves, wives, to me. But in fact, only Plata took place, and the rest are still trembling.
And it was, without exaggeration, the strongest team in the world: Yamanov, I, Hughes, Chesakov, Pasha [Fedorov], Neri, Danil. We could build the best fintech in the world. But this is my reflection - I must say and let go. It is very disappointing that the ambitions defeated rationality.
MK: I would not say that the matter is only in ambitions. I respect and love Oliver very much, he is still a close friend to me. I am also good about Pasha and George - they do interesting things. But building four businesses at the same time, in different countries of the world, is difficult. Perhaps each of them will be more successful separately than if we united.
Yes, Plata is now ahead and is developing faster, but Oliver makes a successful project in Uzbekistan, Pasha and George in the Philippines. One strong team is not a guarantee of a successful business. We need a focus and strong execution. But I sincerely wish them success.
OT: Of course, we wish everyone success. It's just a pity.
O.T.: Yes.
O.T.: No.
O.T.: Absolutely. We have ambitions to enter the market on the market.
O.T.: Yes. You yourself called everything. You look at the [Brazilian digital bank] nubank - they are in Brazil, Colombia, Argentina. Now, maybe $ 50 billion. Latin America is a very interesting market, here you can build a large company. Asia and Europe are not so interesting to us now. Europe is super -competitive, and Asia is complex.
O.T.: Huge capital is needed there. If we created a holding in Dubai, the problem of capital would not be at all. One of the Plata success elements is, at the time of our conversation, more than $ 800 million investments. All of the above -mentioned investment companies have $ 30-50 million maximum.
O.T.: Of course. And now these huge brains are sitting and dodging microbusiness. Although they could - together - to build a company for tens of billions. They may, maybe 40% in share, but capitalization is scanty. And Plata is now Bida $ 3 billion.
O.T.: We have offers.
MK: Yes, investors want.
OT: And for two years we will make an IPO for $ 10 billion. This is interesting. And sitting somewhere in Asia, riveting a small project, which may be profitable in a year, with an estimate of $ 300 million. Someone may be necessary for someone. But Michael and I do not need it.
This is right.
Plata.
All.
Everything will be fine".
A very cool thing.
It is unlikely. Understand?
Never".
