Putin allowed the Belarusians who live in Russia to vote in local elections

Citizens of Russia and Belarus can be elected and voted in local governments in the territory of two countries. The corresponding protocol on amendments to the contract between the countries of the Union State was signed by Vladimir Putin, writes Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

The relevant amendments are made to the contract between Russia and Belarus about the equal rights of citizens of December 25, 1998. The protocol itself was signed by Putin and Alexander Lukashenko on March 13, 2025.

According to changes, Russians who constantly live in Belarus will be able to get the right to elect and be elected to local authorities on its territory. Similar right will appear in Belarusians who live in Russia.

State Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin noted that this initiative is “an important step that will allow citizens of the two states to actively participate in solving local issues that concern them as residents of specific areas.”

Earlier, Belarus and Russia canceled the roaming fee in each other.
