The only Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov can be written off after a protracted repair. The head of VTB Andrei Kostin said about this specialist in Kommersant Andrei Kolesnikov.
According to him, the ship “no longer makes sense to repair,” because “he is already 40 years old, and this is extremely expensive.” Soon the aircraft carrier is going to sell or dispose of.
"Admiral Kuznetsov" is the only aircraft carriage and flagship of the Russian Navy and the Northern Fleet. It was laid down at the Black Sea Shipyard in 1982, and commissioned in 1991.
In 2018, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation and the United Shipbuilding Corporation (OSK) signed a contract for the repair of an aircraft carrier with a plant in Murmansk. It was assumed that the modernization of Admiral Kuznetsov will end in 2020, but this never happened.
In early July 2025, Izvestia wrote that the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation could refuse to restore the aircraft carrier.
