A group of scientists from the National University of Lithuania (Universidad Nacional del Literal) in Argentina found that the effect of a mixture of pesticides on the body of women increases the risks of complications during pregnancy. About this with reference to a new reviewed study writes The Guardian.
The study was attended by 90 pregnant women from the province of Santa Fa-one of the largest agricultural regions of Argentina, where dozens of crops, including cabbage, chicory, tomatoes, parsley, spinach, carrots, pepper, potatoes and strawberries. According to scientists, such a variety of agricultural products is usually associated with the wider use of various types of pesticides.

The research results say that about 40 different pesticides were found in the urine of pregnant women. So, in 81% of women, at least one pesticide was found, in 64% there were several at once. Among them, 34% encountered complications during pregnancy, including gestational hypertension and intrauterine growth retardation.
Researchers also indicate a possible role of specific classes of pesticides on the body: in women with complications, increased levels of triazole fungicides - substances that are widely used in the cultivation of corn, soy and wheat were recorded. According to individual data, they can have reproductive toxicity.
“In most cases, we do not at all imagine how such mixtures affect the body - whether it is a fruit, child or adult. Some may be almost harmless, while others most likely cause serious harm, which we simply have not yet revealed, ”Nathaniel Donly, a specialist in the Center for Biological Diversity, commented on the results of the Pesticides from the Center for Biological Diversity.

Scientists also found out that the difference between urban and rural women in the presence of at least one pesticide in the body was insignificant - this, according to researchers, indicates a serious role of food as a source of effect on the body. However, in the urine of rural women several pesticides were much more often revealed: in 70% of cases compared to 55% among cities. This indicates a higher risk level for women living in rural areas.
The authors emphasize that most existing studies study the influence of individual pesticides, while in reality people are more often influenced by their mixtures - through inorganic food products and during life in agricultural regions. In this case, safety standards are usually developed on the basis of the toxicity of each pesticide separately.
The authors emphasize that the sample in their study was small, so there is a need for larger biomonitoring studies.
