The leader of the Lithuanian conservatives Laurinas Kashnasus proposed to make knowledge of the state language mandatory for extending residence permit, writes Delfi.
“To date, to extend the temporary residence permit in Lithuania, knowledge of the Lithuanian language is not required at a certain level. I propose to introduce this requirement that the people who are here begin to study the state language and respect our state, ”said Kashinas.
According to him, the corresponding bill will be prepared in the coming weeks, he is going to enter it to the Sejm at the end of July. The conservative also emphasized that its political force will resist any attempts to soften the current or planned requirements for the use of the state language. “This is unacceptable, and we will definitely be against the liberalization of the rules,” he said.

In 2023, the Lithuanian Sejm adopted amendments, according to which, from January 1, 2026, all public services in the country should be provided exclusively in the state language. However, the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports proposed to postpone the implementation of this norm for one year.
Earlier, the State Language Inspectorate reported that since 2025, all foreigners who have been in the country under temporary protection and directly working with clients - in the field of trade or services - will have to own the Lithuanian language. However, the government has already postponed the approval of this requirement several times: now it is proposed to extend the adaptation period from three to four years.
According to the Migration Department, as of April 1, 2025, in Lithuania had a permit for living 206,410 foreigners. Among them are the most Ukrainians (72 051), Belarusians (53,739), representatives of the countries of Central Asia (23,111) and Russians (14,652).
