US President Donald Trump in his social network Truth Social said he intends to significantly increase import duties for India - since it allegedly cynically continues to purchase Russian oil and makes business on this.

“India not only purchases a huge amount of Russian oil, but then also sells most of the acquired oil in the open market with a large profit. They don’t care how many people in Ukraine die from the Russian military machine, ”

- wrote Trump.

From August 1, he promised to introduce 25% tariffs for Indian goods. In addition, Trump threatened to introduce duties 100% for imports to the United States from countries that buy Russian oil if Moscow does not go to a peaceful deal in Ukraine until August 8.

When the duties entered into force, several publications, including The New York Times with reference to high -ranking officials, said that India would continue to purchase oil in Russia, despite Trump's threats, since long -term contracts supposedly cannot be torn “just like that”.

At the same time, Reuters reported that the countries of the countries have reduced the procurement of Russian oil. Instead, they allegedly began to purchase oil in the countries of the Middle East and West Africa. And on August 2, Trump said that he “received data” about Delhi's plans to stop buying Russian oil.

However, on August 4, the India Foreign Ministry published an official statement where Trump commented on the economic threats, calling them "unjustified and unreasonable attacks."

The Indian Foreign Ministry drew attention to the data of the EU and Russia turnover in 2024 - 64 billion euros, which is much more than that of India with Russia.

New Delhi add that the EU and the United States themselves continue to purchase chemicals and fertilizers from Russia. Separately, the United States is uranium for the nuclear industry and palladium for electric vehicles. And the EU is iron and steel, and still - energy.

India Foreign Ministry added that the purchase of Russian oil for the country is a necessity, since its oil is sold in the EU, and until recently the United States has actively encouraged such a diversification of supplies designed to stabilize world prices for resources. And for the United States, trade relations with Russia are not necessary, the New Deli statement said.
