The Russian Navy ship "Admiral Chabanenko" may be scrapped

Repairs that began more than 10 years ago are being extended indefinitely.

The repair of the large anti-submarine ship (BOD) Admiral Chabanenko , which began back in 2014, has been extended indefinitely. As Izvestia writes, the work was supposed to be completed in 2025, but this will not happen. The exact timing of the completion of repairs and the ship's release to sea is unknown.

The repairs are carried out in the Murmansk region at the 35th ship repair plant. It is part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) and is known for protracted projects, including work on the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov.

Izvestia notes that it sent a request to USC twice, but received no response.

"Admiral Chabanenko" can be mothballed and then sent to scrap

Military expert Dmitry Boltenkov told Izvestia that the Admiral Chabanenko BPC could suffer the same fate as the Admiral Kuznetsov, which could eventually be sold or disposed of. “Mothballing means decommissioning in a few years. Then no one will deal with it anymore,” the expert noted.

At the same time, Boltenkov emphasized that modernizing the ship could significantly strengthen the Northern Fleet. “If you modernize the Admiral Chabanenko, it will be a good ship. Anyway, no large ships are expected for the Northern Fleet in the coming years. Therefore, it is better to complete its repairs,” said Izvestia’s interlocutor.

Outdated technologies and new problems

The Admiral Chabanenko BOD (project 1155.1) was developed back in the 1980s, and construction was completed in the late 1990s.

After 1991, the construction of a series of ships of Project 1155.1 was abandoned, and Admiral Chabanenko remained unfinished. Only in the late 90s the BOD was finalized and became part of the Navy. Until 2014, the ship was listed in the Northern Fleet, after which it was taken out for repairs. In 2009–2010, the Admiral Chabanenko protected maritime traffic in the Horn of Africa and the Gulf of Aden from pirates.

Experts note that over the years of inactivity, some of the technology was lost, which significantly complicates the restoration of the ship.

According to Boltenkov, the fate of the Admiral Chabanenko will depend on the decisions of the fleet and the amount of funding allocated. Military experts believe that failure to modernize the ship would be a serious loss, but delays in repairs make this scenario increasingly likely.

Previously, “Layout” told what ambitious projects in the Russian military-industrial complex could not be implemented. In particular, “Admiral Kuznetsov” was intended for the Black Sea Fleet and was transferred to the Northern Fleet during the collapse of the USSR, so that Ukraine could not lay claim to it. This led to numerous problems with its maintenance: there were technical specialists left on the Black Sea capable of servicing the ship.
