25 years ago, on August 12, 2000, the largest catastrophe in the post-war history of the Soviet and Russian Navy took place: the Kursk nuclear submarine sank, on board of which there were 118 people. Vladimir Putin at that moment was only a few months as head of state. The actions and statements of the president in this situation (silence, unsuccessful attempts to interact with loved ones, the cynical “she drowned”) turned out to be indicative for the further history of Russia - and an acute public reaction to these actions and words later led to the establishment of real censorship.
