The US Special Supervisor Steve Whitkoff during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin violated the standard diplomatic protocol, reports Reuters with reference to sources.

Whitkoff went to negotiations without a stenographer of the US State Department, one of the agency’s interlocutors said. Why this happened is unknown. As a result, the representative of Trump was left without Putin's specific proposals to complete the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Negotiations of the Special Supervisor of the President of the United States and the Russian president were held on August 6. The next day, Whitkoff, according to the Reuters source, phoned several European leaders and made it clear that Russia was ready to withdraw troops from the Zaporizhzhya and Kherson regions in exchange for Ukraine to retreat from Donbass.

This proposal surprised many participants in a telephone conversation, since it diverged sharply from their own assessments of Putin’s position, the agency’s aware interlocutors say.

At the same time, the next day, Whitkoff announced another position of Moscow. During a telephone conversation organized by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio with European National Security Advisers, the special settlement said that Putin actually did not offer to withdraw troops from two regions. Diplomatic efforts “turned into chaos,” notes Reuters.

Earlier, the sources of some publications, including The Washington Post and Bild, have already reported that Whitkoff probably misunderstood Putin's proposals.

Steve Whitkoff has been friends with the current US President Donald Trump for many years, earlier they both engaged in real estate investments. With the beginning of the second presidential term of Trump, Whitkoff became one of the most important diplomats in the world: he is involved in the settlement of the Russian-Ukrainian war, as well as the war between Israel and Hamas.
At the same time, Whitkoff does not have diplomatic experience, Reuters notes. As reported by NBC News, the Trump's special bearer has already violated the diplomatic protocol, taking advantage of the meetings with Putin's services of the Kremlin translators.
