Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said that the heavy equipment of Ukrainian and Russian troops has long been withdrawn to a distance of 10 kilometers from the front line. According to him, such a distance makes the buffer zone actually already exist. This is how Zelensky commented on the publication of Politico, which states that Europe proposes to create a 40-kilometer buffer zone along the front line.

“Today we have heavy weapons located 10+ km from each other, because everything is hit by drones. This buffer zone, I call it a dead zone, some call it a gray zone, it already exists,” Zelensky noted.

The President of Ukraine added that if Russia wants, the Ukrainian army can be deployed on an even more distant line, and Russian troops can be withdrawn deep into the occupied territories.

“Look at the front line of the Russian army: there are no armored vehicles there, zero tanks, no one is moving forward, because they are losing equipment day and night,” the president emphasized.

European leaders discuss creation of a demilitarized zone

According to Politico, European leaders are considering creating a buffer zone along the entire front line as part of a possible peace agreement. It is expected that peacekeepers will be stationed in the zone to monitor compliance with the ceasefire.

While questions remain about the width of the zone and the size of the contingent, sources give figures from 4 to 60 thousand military personnel. The bulk of the foreign presence will likely be French and British forces, while US troops are not likely to be directly involved.

Functions of peacekeepers and prospects for settlement

The peacekeepers will perform a dual task: patrol the demilitarized zone and train the Ukrainian military. The possibility of creating three lines of defense for Ukraine is also being discussed.
According to the Financial Times, the first line of defense should be a demilitarized zone on the border, possibly under the control of peacekeepers from a third country in agreement with Kiev and Moscow.

Ukrainian troops, armed and trained by NATO, will be on the second line of defense. They will provide the main defense.

The third line of defense is a European deterrent force deployed inland and receiving logistical support from the United States.

The number and timing of the deployment of peacekeepers remain the subject of negotiations. Zelensky noted that any proposals to create a buffer zone must take into account the modern realities of war, including the high efficiency of drones and the destruction of equipment at long distances.

The Russian Foreign Ministry previously stated that collective security guarantees for Ukraine should be built taking into account the interests of neighbors based on the principle of indivisible security.
