The authorities of the Kamchatka Territory warned of a complete disconnection of the Internet in the region due to the "large-scale work" of Rostelecom, which are planned for the period from September 25 to 29.
The provider intends to update the coastal infrastructure of the Sakhalin-Kamchatka underwater fiber-optical line in Ust-Bolshertsky District, the website of the executive bodies of the Kamchatka Territory said. The work itself is expected to take 48 hours, but the situation can be complicated due to hydro- and weather conditions in the sea water area.
The region of the region added that during the Internet disconnecting the Internet, all key objects - banks, shops, services and institutions - will go to satellite communications. The Kamchatka authorities also discussed their plans with business representatives, the report said.
“Our efforts are aimed at ensuring that large retail chains are not left without an Internet connection. Such work has already been carried out with Shamsa and other retail chains. <...> I can definitely say that the inhabitants will not be left without the necessary food, even if they suddenly forget to remove cash, ”said Julia Morozova, chairman of the Kamchatka government.
Kamchatka Territory will become the first Russian region, where the Internet will completely turn off for several days. At the same time, regular shutdowns since the beginning of June have turned from episodic failures into a systemic problem .
According to the “In touch” project, only in June 655 cases of shutdowns were recorded - even then the number of disconnects was larger than all over the world for the entire 2024. In July, it exceeded two thousand, and by August he reached almost three thousand, affecting at least 69 regions, of which 12 communications disappeared completely.
