According to Reuters, after an attack by Ukrainian drones and a fire, the oil refinery in Kirishi in the Leningrad region suspended the operation of its primary oil refining unit. The capacity of the stopped installation is 160 thousand barrels per day, or about 40% of the plant’s refining capacity. According to the agency, it will take about a month to restore it.
At the same time, new attacks on electrical substations were recorded in Belgorod. According to Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov, the attack on the Luch substation killed two people and left tens of thousands of residents without electricity.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said that attacks on Russian energy infrastructure are a response to shelling of Ukrainian cities.
“The Russians don’t understand the cost of all these blackouts. <…> Ukraine does not kill civilians. But they must understand the cost of this,” he said at a press conference in Kyiv with Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof.
According to Zelensky, Ukraine deliberately attacks military and energy facilities, and not civilians, and uses exclusively its own weapons. The President emphasized that when the residents of Russia become “uncomfortable in everyday life,” they “will begin to ask questions to their leadership.”
In recent weeks, the number of attacks on Russian energy facilities has increased significantly - attacks are recorded not only in border areas, but also in the deep rear. Tyumen, located more than 2 thousand kilometers from Ukraine, became the easternmost point where the destruction of drones was reported.
The Russian army, in turn, regularly attacks energy facilities in Ukraine, which leads to large-scale power outages in several regions of the country.
