The Bundestag voted to abolish the acquisition of German citizenship in three years

The German Bundestag (parliament) at a meeting on October 8 voted for amendments to the migration legislation of Germany, abolishing the right to obtain German citizenship under an accelerated procedure within three years.

According to Deutsche Welle, in order to cancel accelerated naturalization, amendments to migration legislation must be adopted by the Bundesrat, the representative office of the federal states of Germany.

• In January 2024, the Bundestagpassed a law making it easier to obtain German citizenship. The amendments, among other things, made it possible to obtain citizenship in three years in case of successful integration into German society - for example, if a foreigner knows German at the C1 level and actively participates in volunteer activities.
• Representatives of the conservative bloc CDU/CSU and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), which formed the ruling coalition in April 2025, agreed that they would cancel the opportunity to obtain German citizenship in three years.
