Nuclear weapons developer Yuri Barmakov dies

The first deputy scientific director of the All-Russian Research Institute of Automation, Yuri Barmakov, died at the age of 93, RIA Novosti reported on October 12, citing a statement from the institute.

Barmakov is an outstanding developer of nuclear weapons. Since 1955, he worked at the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Automation named after Dukhov (part of Rosatom). He went from an engineer to a director of an enterprise - he headed the institute in 1987-2008. In recent years, he worked as first deputy scientific director of VNIIA.

A book about Barmakov, which the institute published in 2021, says that he founded a scientific school in the field of creating nuclear weapons and means of their control, which “enjoys great authority in the industry and organizations of the Ministry of Defense.”

Under his leadership, a number of original nuclear weapons and two generations of test equipment were created.
