US President Donald Trump said that a meeting with Vladimir Putin in Budapest will not take place.

“We canceled the meeting with President Putin. I just thought it was wrong. We wouldn't get to where we were supposed to go, so I canceled it. But we will do it in the future,” Trump said during talks with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House.

Trump also stressed that he has “no time frame” for ending Russia’s war with Ukraine.

Earlier, Trump said that he did not want to hold a “useless meeting” with Putin. “I don’t want to waste my time until I see what happens,” Trump said.

According to the Financial Times and The Telegraph, the decision to cancel the summit was made after a conversation between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on October 16. It was reported that the heads of foreign affairs departments would meet in person, but then it became known that there would be no negotiations.

CNN's interlocutors, in turn, noted that Rubio and Lavrov have “different expectations” regarding the possible end of the war in Ukraine.
