FT: Budapest summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin was canceled after Russian Foreign Ministry memorandum

A planned summit in Budapest between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin has been canceled after Russia refused to compromise on its demands on Ukraine. We are talking about a document that the Russian Foreign Ministry sent to Washington a few days after the last telephone conversation between Putin and Trump.

The memo demanded that the “root causes” of the invasion of Ukraine be addressed, three sources familiar with the situation told the Financial Times . Demands included territorial concessions, a drastic reduction in Ukraine's armed forces and guarantees that it would never join NATO.

The final decision was made after an unsuccessful conversation between US Secretary of State Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov. “Lavrov is clearly tired and seems to believe that he has more important things to do than meet or interact with the United States,” one of the publication’s interlocutors said.

At the end of October, US President Donald Trump announced a meeting with dictator Putin in Budapest. He did not give an exact date, saying that it would take place in the near future. However, a few days later it became known that the meeting in Budapest was cancelled.
