David Beckham knighted

King Charles III knighted 50-year-old footballer David Beckham at a ceremony at Windsor Castle in Berkshire, the BBC reports.

The former England football captain has been awarded a knighthood for his services to football and British society.

Beckham said he was very proud of being knighted:

People know how patriotic I am—I love my country. I have always said how important the monarchy is to my family. I have been lucky enough to travel all over the world, and all people want to talk to me about is our monarchy. I'm proud of it.

Beckham was joined at Windsor Castle by his wife Victoria and parents Sandra and David.

Victoria Beckham, who received an OBE in 2017 for her services to fashion, designed and sewed the suit her husband wore to the ceremony. “[King Charles] was very impressed with my costume,” Beckham noted.

• David Beckham played for Manchester United, Real Madrid, Milan, PSG, and Los Angeles Galaxy. With United, he won the English Premier League six times and won the Champions League in 1999. He made 115 caps for England and scored 17 goals. Currently, Beckham is a co-owner of the American football club Inter Miami, for which Lionel Messi plays.
