“The stations are on fire. There is zero generation now.” The work of the Centrenergo thermal power plant was stopped due to the Russian attack on Ukraine
The Ukrainian company Centerenergo reported on the evening of November 8 that the operation of all its thermal power plants was stopped due to Russian strikes. A statement issued by the company says that its thermal power plants suffered the most massive blow since the beginning of a full-scale war:
An unprecedented number of missiles and countless drones - several per minute - were aimed at the same thermal power plants that we rebuilt after the devastating 2024 attack.
“The stations are on fire! We stopped... Now there is zero generation. Zero! We lost what we were restoring around the clock. Completely!” said Centerenergo.
“Our thermal power plants are not military facilities,” the energy company emphasized. - We don't make weapons! We employ civilians."
Centerenergo promised to do everything possible to restore the stations’ operation. “We will again do what we do best, overcoming fatigue and pain from losses: restore, repair and introduce a new generation! Because there is no other choice. Ukraine is indestructible! Ukrainians cannot be broken!” the company said in a statement.
- Centrenergo is the only state-owned energy generating company in Ukraine. Before the start of a full-scale war, Centerenergo had three power plants: Trypilska Thermal Power Plant in the Kyiv region, Zmievskaya Thermal Power Plant in the Kharkov region and Uglegorskaya Thermal Power Plant in the Donetsk region.
- The Uglegorsk thermal power plant was captured by Russian troops at the end of July 2022. At the Zmievskaya TPP, all power units were destroyed as a result of a Russian strike in March 2024. Trypilska Thermal Power Plant, which was the largest supplier of electricity in the Kyiv, Cherkasy and Zhytomyr regions, was destroyed by Russian missiles and drones in April 2024.
- Ukraine's energy infrastructure is a constant target of Russian attacks, but the intensity of attacks has increased in the last few months before the onset of winter.
