Ukrainian citizen Sergei Kuznetsov, detained in Italy in the case of undermining the Nord Stream gas pipeline system, stopped his hunger strike declared on October 31 due to the conditions of detention in an Italian prison. The Ukrainian’s lawyer, Nikola Canestrini, told ANSA about this on November 11.

According to him, during the protest action, 49-year-old Kuznetsov lost nine kilograms. He ended his hunger strike after the Italian authorities promised to fully respect his rights, in particular regarding the issue of food that meets his needs.

Kuznetsov refused food at the end of October, demanding, in particular, that he be provided with proper food and decent living conditions, and also be allowed to meet with his family and receive information on the same basis as other prisoners.

Sergei Kuznetsov is the first person detained in the Nord Stream bombing case. He was detained in August at the request of Germany. The Italian courts supported his extradition to the German authorities, but Kuznetsov’s defense challenged this.
According to German investigators, Kuznetsov was part of a group of saboteurs who caused explosions at the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea in September 2022. According to media reports, Kuznetsov is a former employee of the Security Service of Ukraine and a retired captain of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
In Poland in September, at the request of Germany, a second suspect in the Nord Stream bombing, 49-year-old diving instructor Vladimir Zhuravlev, was detained. A court in Warsaw in October refused to extradite him to Germany and released him from custody.
