Kommersant writes that the Russian Ministry of Health has developed acts regulating the terms of compulsory service for students at medical universities. The maximum period is three years, but it applies only to certain specialties - several types of surgery, oncology and neonatology.

It was previously reported that all graduates will have to work for three years after training. Now some graduates have been completely exempted from compulsory service. Among them is a specialist in “food hygiene”, “occupational hygiene”, “organization of sanitary and epidemiological service”, “aviation and space medicine” and “diving medicine”.

Graduates who choose rural areas, small towns or the occupied territories of Ukraine for mandatory employment will work the least. In the occupied parts of Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, the work period for each specialty will be half as long as in the regions of Russia. The minimum period will be one year.

The law on compulsory service for students of medical universities was signed on November 17 by Vladimir Putin. It will come into force on the first of March two thousand twenty-six.

The document assumes that after graduation, the student must undergo “mentoring” - work in a medical institution under a targeted contract. In case of refusal, the person will be obliged to return the costs of his training to the institution and pay a fine equal to two full tuition amounts.

The law is criticized both by the students themselves and by the State Duma deputies who proposed amendments. Some amendments have been adopted, including those that reduce the period of service in certain circumstances or for specific specialties.
