Part of the railway was supposed to run from Nizhnevartovsk to Ust-Ilimsk, and the other - from Tashtagol to Urumqi (China). Experts say that without the North Siberian Railway it is impossible to attract a significant part of cargo from Kuzbass, Khakassia and the Urals to the Northern Sea Route.
