The uprising is 200 years old. “New Europe” is looking into whether that protest is still relevant today

On December 14, 1825, 200 years ago, the Decembrist Uprising took place. Young nobles took to Senate Square, demanding the abolition of serfdom, fair courts, and equality of people of all classes before the law. The big rebellion ended with the execution of five people; the authorities sent more than a hundred into exile in Siberia.

Why did the uprising fail? Were the Decembrists revolutionaries? What in the history of this protest frightens the Russian authorities now?
