Trump suspends green card lottery program

The Donald Trump administration announced the suspension of the green card lottery program following the shooting at Brown University and the murder of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor. The police linked the two crimes.

“At the direction of President Trump, I am immediately directing USCIS to suspend the DV-1 program to ensure that no more Americans are harmed by this disastrous initiative,” US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem said .

The shooting on the campus of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, occurred on December 13, when the school was conducting final exams. Two students were killed and nine others were injured.

According to US authorities, the shooter was 48-year-old Portuguese citizen Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, a former student at Brown University. In 2017, Valente won a green card through the DV1 lottery program and flew to the United States.

He is also suspected of murdering 48-year-old MIT professor Nuno Loureiro, which occurred a few days after the shooting at the university on December 15. As the police said, Valente and the murdered professor worked in the same scientific field, physics, they studied together in Portugal in the late 1990s, but the motives that prompted both crimes are still unknown.

Yesterday, Valente was found dead in Salem, New Hampshire, in a storage unit he owned. Apparently he committed suicide.
