Trump invited Putin to the Gaza Peace Council

The organization is part of the US President's peace plan along with the deployment of international forces

The United States invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to join the Gaza Peace Council . This was announced by Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov. According to him, the invitation came through diplomatic channels, and the Russian side is still studying the terms of participation.

“Yes, President Putin also received an invitation through diplomatic channels to join this Peace Council, we are currently studying all the details of this proposal, we hope for contacts with the American side to clarify all the nuances,” Peskov said.

What is known about the Peace Council

US President Donald Trump announced the creation of the Gaza Peace Council on January 16, 2026. The organization is part of his Gaza peace plan along with the deployment of international forces. The council's stated purpose is to promote stability, restore "robust and legitimate" governance and prevent conflict.

Trump himself headed the council's executive committee. It also included, in particular, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, special envoy Steve Witkoff, adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner, and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. Board decisions will be made by a majority vote, but are subject to approval by the chairman.

President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban also received invitations to join the Peace Council. Kazakhstan has been invited to become one of the founding states, and Hungary has already agreed to participate.

How the Peace Council will be structured

According to the draft charter, decisions in the Peace Council are made by a majority vote, but are approved by the chairman, the President of the United States. Each state receives one vote and a mandate for up to three years.

“The three-year membership period does not apply to member states that contribute more than $1 billion in cash to the Peace Council during the first year after the charter takes effect,” the document , seen by Bloomberg, said.

From Gaza to Ukraine and Venezuela and fears of an alternative to the UN

The Peace Council was originally conceived as an international structure to stabilize and restore governance in conflict zones and is currently focused on the Gaza Strip. But, as the Financial Times reports, the United States intends to extend its powers to Venezuela and Ukraine. If these plans are implemented, the Peace Council could actually turn into an alternative to the UN , the publication notes.

Arab and Western diplomats have already expressed concern about the initiative. The Peace Council has not yet begun its work; its composition is expected to be presented at the World Economic Forum in Davos. It runs from January 19 to 23.

It is expected that the structure will include representatives of Ukraine, Europe, NATO and Russia, and the Council’s task will be to guarantee the implementation of the future peace plan and monitor its compliance.

The US did not agree with Israel on the composition of the Gaza management committee

Israel said the announcement of the composition of the Gaza governance committee, subordinate to the Peace Council, was not agreed with Israel and was contrary to its policy.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu instructed the Foreign Minister to contact the US Secretary of State on this issue.

Presumably, Netanyahu is against the inclusion of Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and senior Qatari diplomat Ali Al-Thawadi in the committee.
It is also reported that Trump offered Turkish President Recep Erdogan to join the Peace Council. Both Türkiye and Qatar have been sharply critical of Israel and its handling of the war in Gaza.
